Jógvan Tróndarson Jógvan Tróndarson was employed by Royal Greenland on 1 April 1987 and has just celebrated his 25th anniversary with the company. In his day, he worked on a ship in the Faroe Islands which was later sold to a Greenlandic fleet and changed its name to Amerloq. Later, the fleet bought Abel Egede, which subsequently changed its name to Kâgsássuk, which Jógvan joined in 1991. He was skipper until the ship was sold in 2000. Since then, Jógvan has been involved in designing the prawn trawler Akamalik, on which he has since been skipper. Captain of the sea-faring prawn trawler akamalik: The time has come for the fishing community to unite fleets, biologists and politicians join forces and prepare the groundwork for a future mandate to demand fishing rights in the waters of other countries or nations according to captain of the sea-faring prawn trawler Akamalik, Jógvan Tróndarson, who has been fishing the coasts of Greenland for 25 years. Jógvan Tróndarson’s eagerness to spread his message shines from his eyes, while his ges ticulations emphasise his sense of conviction. During his 25 years on the seas around Green land he has observed, followed and participated in debates on the migration of fish. And, in light of the fact that prawns are retreating from the fishing grounds combined with climate changes which are resulting in new fish species coming into the waters around Greenland’s coast, Jógvan is convinced that there is only one way for Green land to go in the fishing industry of the future. It’s fair enough that all the fleets are carrying out their own exploratory fishing, but when we have to wage battle against other EU nations who already have access to vast tracts of the fishing grounds, then it is important that we stand united – whether we are fishermen, bio logists or politicians. The individual fleets have no earthly chance of taking up the battle against the large nations on their own. Therefore, the fleets should join forces in a forum consisting of people with ex pertise in their respective fields, such as biolog ists and lawyers, who can ensure that fishing is carried out legally, and politicians who can mus ter the political backing, as well as representa tives of the fishermen and fleets who know a thing or two about fishing. Such a forum can prepare the ground for the strategic work that will form the basis of Greenlandic demands within the individual fields of fishing, declares Jógvan Tróndarson. Jógvan Tróndarson: - It is crucial that fishermen, fleets, biologists and politicians stand as one. greenland is entitled to its share of the cake when new fish species arrive in its waters. therefore, it is a matter of urgency that a forum is established where competing shipping Greenland has a right to the fish In recent years, Jógvan Tróndarson has observed that, as the sea around Greenland gradually gets warmer, various pelagic fish species like blue 2 NAVIGATIO NR. 34 2012
