whatever our job. It is a sign of a healthy business, and in fact I think it is an intrinsic part of human nature. To do things much better on the other hand requires that you do things in a radically different way. It demands that we set very ambitious objectives, and that we are willing to invest in innovative methods and innovative technologies. This issue of Navigatio includes two examples of this approach. The first example concerns inshore cod. As we know, there have been major quality issues with net-caught cod, which has led to sales prices that are significantly lower than for other cod. The objective we set ourselves was not to im- prove quality by a small degree each year. No, the goal we set was to raise the quality of the cod caught in pound nets so it matched the quality of cod produced at sea. This calls for new fishing methods and the innovative use of technologies and processes – but there is a good chance that we will achieve our goal. And on top of everything, it’s really exciting work for everyone involved in the project. The second example relates to machine-peeled shrimps. Here we must acknowledge that, as far as taste, texture and colour are concerned, a machine-peeled shrimp is not as good as a shrimp which is cooked and peeled by the consumer. We have all become accustomed to this – but does it have to remain so? Here, we have launched an innovative project in collaboration with leading research- ers where the aim is to find methods and technologies which in every respect bring machine-peeled shrimps up to par with handpeeled shrimps. It is ambitious, but a good example of our desire to not just do things a bit better – but much better. As the world’s biggest supplier of cold water shrimps and Greenland halibut, we are in a position to raise our products to ‘the next level’. And in a world where the demand for high-quality seafood is growing all the time, it is almost our duty to do so.
