Closest to the fish, closest to the customer and closest to the consumer This issue of Navigatio which you have just opened is dedicated to one of the best fish in the world: the Greenland halibut. The articles – and in particular the photographs – provide a fascinating insight into how Royal Greenland’s vision of being ‘closest to the fish, closest to the customer and closest to the consumer’ is being realised in practice. The articles cover the whole process – from the catching and landing of the Greenland halibut, to its processing and final supply to the large retail, food service and industrial customers. The whole value chain is carefully tailored to how different consumers prefer to prepare, serve and eat Greenland halibut, something which varies greatly from country to country. The articles also describe the many back-up functions – IT, HR, logistics and finance – which support the value chain and thereby ensure that every single fish ends up on the right plate. I think that our communications staff and everyone who has contributed to the articles have done a great job, which illustrates three important factors: 1. Our value chain is complex. 2. Our value chain works. 3. Our value chain works because Royal Greenland has been able to attract and develop highly competent employees for all functions. When our complex value chain works, we are very difficult to compete with. There are competitors who compete with us in relation to the fishing or the fish they land. There are others who compete with us in relation to the processing. And there are others still who compete with us in relation to sales. However, very few businesses are able to compete with us on all three counts. This is because of our skilled and hard-working employees everywhere. It’s probably not something that you think about or appreciate every single day – but think about it when you read this issue of Navigatio, which illustrates how many colleagues are actually involved in the Greenland halibut’s journey from the cold sea in the north to well-laid tables in the south. At Royal Greenland, we are convinced that the key to good results – not just in one, two or 2 NAVIGATIO NO. 1 • 2016
