Over the past few years we have redeveloped the Royal Greenland Academy as a training centre, especially for our factory employees. Each year, this costs Royal Greenland a not inconsiderable sum of money, but in reality the value of our contribution is far greater than the financial expense. This is because we can provide these development opportunities more efficiently than anyone else as we already have the physical facilities for the courses, and because, of course, the employees are already gathered at the factories. Another example of effective CSR is Royal Greenland’s recent takeover of eleven factories after Arctic Green Food went bankrupt. Of the eleven plants, only two are operational, as the others were allowed to fall into disrepair by the previous owners. Reopening and developing the facilities will pave the way for creating a hundred or more workplaces, both at the factories and among local fishermen. In addition to benefiting the people who will be re-employed, the takeover also benefits the state and the local authorities as they will save money on welfare payments. We expect that Royal Greenland will be losing money for several years on running most of these eleven plants, but we are reasonably convinced that we can run them better than any other company. This is because we already have a strong operating and maintenance organisation, which will assume responsibility for the plants – and because we already have a strong, global sales machine, which can sell products from the factories as and when they are reopened. The costs we incur in running the majority of the factories are definitely far less than the social value derived from their re-opening. This is CSR at its best.
