Inuits produce with care Fisheries consultant Therkel Mathiassen believes that fishermen’s supplies to the factory in Qaanaaq of carefully processed catches testifies to the Qaanaaq fishermen’s successful transition from sealing to fishing. “All the fishermen in Qaanaaq supply their extremely carefully processed catches of Greenland halibut to the factory, and therefore the landings are of a very high quality,” explains Therkel Mathiassen. As a Royal Greenland fisheries consultant, Therkel Mathiassen has co-taught a course on the use of the hydraulic winch Oilwind 07-14. Therkel noted that fishermen in Qaanaaq treat their catches with great care. Shows responsibility In winter, longline fishing for Greenland halibut in Qaanaaq takes place on the ice. Fishing stops once the waters are ice-free as the Greenland halibut disappears from the Qaanaaq area during this period. Therkel Mathiassen says that the course has provided the fishermen in Qaanaaq with thorough knowledge of the fishing methods and how to treat Greenland halibut. “Once the fishermen in Qaanaaq have winched in their catch, they remove the hook and cut the bloodline, making sure that it does not get into contact with other fish. Having bled the fish, they move away from the spot and gut “The Greenland halibut supplied to the factory in Qaanaaq is of a very high quality,” says Therkel Mathiassen. the fish, and having washed it in a tub, they arrange the fish so they are frozen individually and don’t stick to one another; once frozen, they are stacked. And thanks to the extreme care shown by the fishermen, the catches of Greenland halibut supplied to the factory in Qaanaaq are of a very high quality,” explains Therkel Mathiassen. The quality of the fish is evaluated on the basis of the way in which they are handled and processed. In order to ensure catches of the highest quality, a set of guidelines has been produced for the fishermen in Qaanaaq who supply the Royal Greenland factories. Therkel Mathiassen says that the fishermen in Qaanaaq have been extremely responsible. “The supply of high-quality Greenland halibut by the Qaanaaq fishermen shows that the fishermen are not only familiar with the guidelines – they have also acted very responsibly. I believe therefore that the supply of high-quality raw fish by the Qaanaaq fishermen, with “Once the fishermen in Qaanaaq have winched in their catch, they remove the hook and cut the bloodline, making sure that it does not come into contact with other fish,” says Therkel Mathiassen. 4 NAVIGATIO NO. 2 2015
